Yan Chai Hospital (YCH) was founded in 1973 by the Yan Chai Hospital Board of Directors equipped initially with 100 beds. Starting as a convalescent service provider, YCH has over the years developed into an acute general hospital with 722 beds and 2,036 staff members (as at 31 December 2016), providing Tsuen Wan and its neighboring areas with acute and extended care services. In the year 1991, YCH was enrolled as one of the public hospitals operating under the auspices of the Hospital Authority. YCH is one of an acute hospital under the Kowloon West Cluster (KWC) of the Hospital Authority (HA), and also serves as a referral specialty centre for Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery within KWC. Besides, YCH is one of the major hospitals in Hong Kong to provide total joint replacement service. In addition to catering a 24-hour Accident & Emergency service, YCH also provides a string of multi-disciplinary specialty services and allied health services to meet public demands. YCH has also established various clinical centres in recent years, including Bess Tsin Man Kuen Wellness Clinic for Breast Disease cum Endocrine Surgery, Tsang Wing Yue Memorial Day Centre for ENT Ambulatory Care, Tsang Wing Yue Memorial Operating Suite for Head & Neck Tumour Minimally Invasive Surgery, Total Joint Replacement Centre, Pao On Acute Cerebro-Vascular Treatment Centre, Integrated Diabetes Mellitus / Endocrine and Renal Ambulatory Care Services, Chow Ho Yuen Endoscopy Centre as well as So Chan Wai-hang Geriatric Day Hospital serving patients with needs.
Furthermore, there is a General Practice Clinic (GPC) providing general and family medicine specialist out-patient consultations. The GPC also serves as a training centre for students in Family Medicine. Besides, YCH manages two General Out-Patient Clinics, namely Lady Trench General Out-Patient Clinic and Mrs. Wu York Yu General Out-Patient Clinic, providing pluralistic primary health care to the community.

Facilities
Facilities of the YCH are set out as follows (as at December 2016): Block A - is a 23-storeyed building. Currently it accommodates staff overnight rooms and changing rooms, conference rooms, lecture theatre, Hospital Administration and offices of several service units.
Block B - a 19-storeyed main service building accommodating the following services/facilities: acute wards, isolation ward, Accident & Emergency Department, Emergency Medicine ward, Operating Theatres, Anaesthetic Department, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Haemodialysis Unit, Acute Cerebro-Vascular Treatment Centre, Wellness Centre for Breast Disease, Endocrine Surgery Clinic, ENT Ambulatory Centre, Total Joint Replacement Centre, Department of Radiology, Special Diagnostic Centre, Endoscopy Centre, Pathology Department and allied health services including Occupational Therapy Department, Physiotherapy Department, Medical Social Services Department.
Block C - a 12-storeyed block completed in 2015, accommodating hospital services include General Practice Clinic, Family Medicine Specialist Clinic, Specialist Out-patient services, Pharmacy, Dietetic service, Speech Therapy, Paediatrics and Adolescent Day Centre, Health Resource Centre, Integrated Diabetes Mellitus / Endocrine and Renal Ambulatory Care Services and Geriatric Day Hospital. In addition, medical services which are managed by the Yan Chai Hospital Board (YCH Board) such as Chinese Medicine Clinic, Dental Clinic and the Head Office of YCH Board are also located in this block.
Multi-Services Complex - a 13-storeyed building housing an extended care centre on part of 8/F to 12/F to provide rehabilitation and infirmary services together with other allied health services including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Prosthetics & Orthotics. Moreover, office of Community Nursing Service is also located in this building. Besides, there are day and residential welfare facilities, nursing home, etc. which are managed by the YCH Board, occupying the G/F rising to the 8/F (part only) of the building.
Staffing
As at 31 December 2016, YCH had a staff strength of 2,036, broken down into 185 medical staff, 700 nursing staff, 201 allied health staff and 950 other staff groups including administrative and supporting staff.
