Queen Mary Hospital is constructed to replace the Government Civic Hospital located at Sai Ying Pun, which was the first public hospital in Hong Kong. Since the saturating facilities in 1920s, then Governor Clementi decided to build a new hospital in Pok Fu Lam, which is the existing location of QMH. The new hospital provided more advanced equipment and more comprehensive service.
Queen Mary Hospital was opened on 13 April of 1937, by Andrew Caldecott, the then Governor of Hong Kong, and became the the teaching hospital for The University of Hong Kong in the same year. Queen Mary Hospital was opened with 546 beds, which was the the largest hospital in the Far East. The Main Block of QMH was consisted of seven floors and five wings in the form of a H-shaped structure, still in use today. During World War II in 1940s, QMH was equipped to deal with accident cases and those in need of emergency surgery, was fully utilized to handle bomb casualties from downtown. However, The hospital was greatly expanded over the years, with two major expansion projects completed in 1967 (Professorial Block) and 1980 (Blocks J & K), and Block K was even the tallest hospital building in Asia at 137 metres (28 storeys).
To enhance contacts and cooperation between hospitals to make more effective use of resources and triage patients, the HA was established the Hong Kong West Cluster in October 2002, covering Central, Western and Southern Districts of Hong Kong Island with a population of around 530,000 people. Queen Mary Hospital became the leading hospital in the cluster, to mainly provide comprehensive specialist services.
Other hospitals and institutions in Hong Kong West Cluster:
Grantham Hospital, Fung Yiu King Hospital, Tsan Yuk Hospital, Tung Wah Hospital, The Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital at Sandy Bay, and MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre.
Queen Mary Hospital currently also serves as a territory-wide tertiary and quaternary referral centre for many complex and advanced services, including organ and bone marrow transplants, neonatal intensive care, paediatric surgery, assisted reproduction, coronary care, oral maxillo-facial surgery, burns and reconstructive surgery and neurosurgery. Besides, it is the designated liver transplant centre in Hong Kong since July 2003 providing world-class standard liver transplant service. Since the relocation of cardiothoracic surgical and associated services from Grantham Hospital to Queen Mary Hospital in July 2008, the Hospital has also become the only heart, heart lung transplant and paediatric cardiac surgery centre in Hong Kong.
