The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the organization that established and operating Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, which was founded since 1863 in USA. The Church currently contains 13 divisions and 130 Union Missions, where Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions is managed by "Chinese Union Mission (CHUM)" under the "Northern Asia-Pacific Division (NSD)". CHUM is currently operating three non-profit healthcare institutions, including "Hong Kong Adventist Hospital", "Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital" and "Taiwan Adventist Hospital."
In 1960s, the Seventh-day Adventist Church invited Dr. Harry Miller, a American physician, to construct hospital for Hong Kong. Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital was first began service in 1964 with the help of the church, Hong Kong Jockey Club, churches, and the Hong Kong and U.S. governments, along with many other generous individuals. Dr Miller then started building the second hospital Hong Kong Island in the late 1960s. Dr Chan Shun, the founder and former Chair and Managing Director of Crocodile Garments Limited, contributed the first HK$1 million, with donations from many other philanthropists following. Hong Kong Adventist Hospital was finally established in 1971.
Hong Kong Adventist Hospital continuously introduces new medical technology since its establishment. Early in 1985, the Hong Kong Adventist Heart Center was the first of its kind established by a private hospital in Hong Kong, offering one-stop service. Hospital also established the Minimally Invasive Surgery and Endoscopy Education Center (2010), The Hong Kong Adventist Oncology Center (2012), the new Minimally Invasive Surgical Center with advanced endoscopic equipments and robotic surgical system (2013), etc.
In 2012, the two Adventist Hospitals in Hong Kong became the first hospitals in the city to be accepted as members of the Health Promoting Hospitals Network, initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO). The global network assists health care organizations to implement health promotion and education programs.
