Sheung Wan Civic Centre (SWCC) is located in 4/F to 7/F of Shueng Wan Municipal Service Building, opened in 1989 and managed by Leisure and Cultural Services Department at present. SWCC is one of the most important arena in Hong Kong Island, providing Theatre, Lecture Hall, Exhibition Hall and URBTIX Box Office. The offices of Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra also located here. SWCC is close to Sheung Wan MTR Station, Sheung Wan Tram terminus and Macau Ferry. There are also several bus / minibus routes pass through, connecting Hong Kong and Kowloon districts. Sheung Wan Municipal Service Building, that the complex Sheung Wan Civic Centre located in, opened in 1989. It replaced the old Western Market, and managed by Urban Council in early days (Became Provisional Urban Council after the Return). Since the reorganization of government in 2000, SWCC became managed by Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
To enhance the facilities, a series of rebuilding of Lecture Hall, Theatre and Exhibition Hall was performed in 2004.
To promote the arts in the community, LCSD had started the Venue Partnership Scheme since April 2009. The present partner is Perry Chiu Experimental Theatre.
There are Theatre and Lecture Hall on 5/F of SWCC. Theatre is a traditional proscenium theatre designed with 480 seats, suitable for drama, dance, music and assembly performances. User can also remove seats for setting Orchestra pit when necessary. Lecture Hall is also proscenium designed, providing 150 seats. It is a relatively small venue, equipped to stage lectures, seminars, classes and small music performances.
Exhibition Hall located on 6/F provides 360 sq.m. area which is suitable for community functions, and exhibition of art, photography and academic.
However, SWCC also houses Rehearsal Hall, Dance Practice Room, Music Practice Rooms and Art Studios, providing venues for rehearsals or small visual art performances, for citizens or groups.
